On May’s Patch Tuesday, Microsoft patched PowerPoint with a single security update.
The update – security bulletin MS09-017 – patched 14 separate vulnerabilities, 11 of which were rated “critical,” Microsoft highest threat ranking. The bulletin’s overall rating is “critical”, since the vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution.
While Microsoft patched all still-supported Windows editions of Office – including Office 2000, XP, 2003 and 2007 – it was not able to complete fixes for the three vulnerabilities that also affect Office 2004 and Office 2008 on Macs. Updates for the additional products (Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac, Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac, Open XML File Format Converter for Mac, Microsoft Works 8.5 and Microsoft Works 9.0) will be released when testing is complete and high quality is ensured, the company said.
As each month, the software giant has also released an updated version of the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.
